Climate change adaptation study for York and North Yorkshire underway
The Climate Change Adaptation Study for the region will be undertaken by the RSK Group (including ADAS and WRc) for the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority (YNYCA).
York and North Yorkshire is a region of huge geographical variation – from the uplands of the North York Moors and the pastures of the Yorkshire Dales to the coastal towns and headlands in the East. It is home to two national parks, and three Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Agriculture use accounts for around 70% of the region’s geography. The impacts of climate change will be varied and unjust, affecting regions and communities differently.
To build resilience, YNYCA must manage and adapt to the impacts (threats and opportunities) of extreme weather, alongside reducing emissions and mitigating further climate change.
ADAS Director for Climate Adaptation and Resilience Charles Ffoulkes will lead the work alongside coordinator ADAS Principal Consultant Tom Sheils and a multidisciplinary team of experts. It will include extensive engagement with a wide range of stakeholders in the region.
This study will:
- provide a detailed assessment of the environmental, economic, and social impacts of climate change on the region.
- evaluate the specific vulnerabilities of York and North Yorkshire.
- help identify effective measures to enhance the region’s resilience, co-designed with local stakeholders to effectively address locally specific impacts.
The study findings will inform adaptation planning and the subsequent development of Adaptation Plans within the region.
