Nutrient management planning tool updated
Defra’s Nutrient Management Planning Tool has been updated to enable quick estimates of manure nutrients.
A new update released today (2 September 2026) to the Nutrient Management Planning Tool (NMPT-GB) enables farmers and advisers to quickly estimate the crop-available nutrients (nitrogen, phosphate, and potash) supplied by organic manures and their financial value.
The NMPT-GB tool, developed by Defra, ADAS, and RSK Business Solutions, already used MANNER-NPK calculations to estimate nutrient availability from organic manures. The tool now includes a standalone MANNER-NPK calculator so that farmers and advisers can quickly estimate nutrient availability from organic manures and their financial value without completing a full nutrient management plan.
The latest version also includes updates to the nitrous oxide emission algorithms and the ammonia loss algorithms for digestate.
The MANNER-NPK model underpins the guidance on crop available nitrogen supply from organic materials given in AHDB Nutrient Management Guide Section 2 Organic Materials.
By bringing nutrient planning and organic manure calculations together in one place, NMPT-GB helps users make more informed nutrient management decisions, optimise fertiliser use, and maximise the value of organic materials.
ADAS delivered a webinar introducing the tool earlier this year. This session explains how the tool can support practical decision-making on farms. If you missed it, watch back the webinar recording here and on our YouTube channel.
