We've come up with a way to help clients trial new products while sharing trial costs and retaining full confidentiality of their results.

Join a collaborative ADAS field lab to test your fertilisers, biostimulants and novel nutrition strategies in a cost-effective way

With so many nutrition products and services available, it’s expensive to trial them individually. That’s why we’ve developed a way that enables clients to rigorously test new products and nutrition management strategies while sharing trial costs and retaining full confidentiality of their results.

By combining multiple slot trials into a single field lab, we can include a broader range of controls and assess more products and nutrition strategies in commercial winter wheat than ever before.

It may also be possible to include as part of ADOPT-funded projects.

What we can test

The field lab is open to:

  • Autumn and spring applied fertilisers
  • Products designed to increase nutrient use efficiency with particular emphasis on nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P)
  • Products which may increase nutrient availability and/or uptake by other mechanisms (e.g., biostimulants)
  • Biostimulants designed to reduce manufactured fertiliser use
  • Biostimulants designed to improve quality traits

We replicate treatments four times and include:

  • Products which are applied to the seed, to the soil at drilling or during the growing season (autumn or spring)
  • Products applied as a solid, liquid or foliar product

About the field lab

The field lab will be established in North Yorkshire in a field with a low soil nitrogen supply. This will ensure a clear response to N inputs. It will also have a P index of 2 to allow P nutrition strategies and products designed for both high and low index soils.

Initial entries begin at £1950 + VAT and include:

  • Plot establishment and maintenance from drilling to harvest
  • Pre-harvest lodging assessment and yield
  • Post-harvest assessments (thousand grain weight, specific weight, moisture)
  • Up to two sprays timings and four fertiliser applications
  • The ability to design your own nutrition programme to compete with the RB209 standard, along with a supply of commonly used fertilisers to choose from.

Additional assessment packages tailored to nutrition, phosphorus, and biostimulant products are available. Bespoke packages can be designed on request by getting in contact with the ADAS Crop Physiology team.
