Wanted dead or alive: Pests to test for resistance
As part of a Defra-funded resistance monitoring project, we want growers and agronomists to collect pests found in cereal, oilseed or horticultural crops.
The most common ones you may come across include:
- grain aphid
- bird cherry-oat aphid
- peach-potato aphid
- cabbage stem-flea beetle
If you have spotted any of the above or a different pest species in your crops, we would be grateful if you could capture and post to ADAS so we can test its resistance status. In return, we will send you the results of your sample and confirm whether resistance is an issue in your field. We will also share wider results about countrywide resistance once available.
The purpose of the project is to understand the spread and severity of pesticide resistance across the UK. If we can understand how widespread resistance is, it will allow us to target actions to prevent any further spread.
It doesn’t matter if the sample is alive or dead. If alive, we can test for metabolic resistance. If dead, we will carry out molecular tests to assess genetic mutations.
How to collect a sample
- Pop the sample into a container with some plant material and dry tissue to soak up excess moisture.
- Take a note of where the sample was found.
- Put the sample, location found, and your contact details into an envelope.
- Post to Rory Jones or Nasamu Musa
We can send out collection kits (including pre-paid envelopes) if required. Contact enquiries@adas.co.uk to arrange.
