10MW battery storage facility application approved in Slindon, Staffordshire
Project overview
The ADAS Planning Team has significant experience obtaining approval for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across England. On 27 January 2023, we received approval from Stafford Borough Council for a 10MW battery storage facility.
Background
The development is situated at Aspley House Farm, Slindon, on a parcel of land outside a Settlement Boundary. Therefore, it is considered to be within the Open Countryside, and strict policy criteria had to be adhered to in order to allow the development to proceed. The case put forward by ADAS Planning was that the proposal would help diversify the existing farmland and make efficient use of underutilised land.
The land would also return to agricultural use following the proposal’s lifespan. In addition, we outlined how the proposal would provide long and short-term job opportunities within the local area whilst allowing the existing agricultural business to diversify their source of income.
Actions
Due to the nature of the site, detailed arboricultural, landscape, and ecological documents were required to address any concerns. These included an Arboricultural Impact Assessment, a Landscape and Visual Appraisal, and a Preliminary Ecological Appraisal.
Although further information was requested on condition by relevant consultees, they and the Case Officer ultimately deemed the impact on the environment acceptable.
Results
Stafford Borough Council accepted that the proposed development is suitably located adjacent to an existing electricity distribution centre. It acknowledged that the development would support national electricity infrastructure, ensure a reliable electricity supply, and reduce carbon emissions.
Furthermore, the Council agreed that the development would provide employment opportunities during the construction and operation of the facility.
