ADAS have years of experience supporting farmers to appraise their existing business, to understand whether diversification is right for them and if so, what their options could be.

Project background

Peter and his father Steve farm a 420 acre mixed beef and arable enterprise in Herefordshire. They also have an existing orchard on-farm and had been pressing small quantities to make apple juice.

Peter and Steve were interested in finding out whether they could move into making more juice to sell locally and approached ADAS to help.

Actions taken

How ADAS are able to help:

  • Appraisal of the existing business to understand its strengths and weaknesses.
  • Benchmarking the existing enterprises against farmers in the area.
  • Develop a business plan to support an application to the bank to fund the project.
  • Identify appropriate grant routes and make an application on their behalf.

Results

After working with ADAS, Peter and Steve decided to buy a small commercial press, selling initially to local businesses.

Since launching their still, cloudy apple juice, demand has been so great that they are now purchasing apples to keep up and are working with ADAS on their options for funding a second machine.

They have also asked ADAS to work with them on nutrition planning for their beef cattle so that they can use the apple by-product to reduce feed costs.
