To minimise nutrient pollution, we developed nutrient management software tools for farmers and their advisers to combat the issues.

Background

Good management of manufactured fertiliser and organic manure nutrients (e.g. nitrogen, phosphate, potash, sulphur and lime) applied to land is essential for maximising food production without unnecessary and wasteful applications of nutrients which can result in nutrient pollution of water and air.

To minimise nutrient pollution, ADAS developed the PLANET and MANNER-NPK nutrient management software tools. These are freely available for use by farmers and their advisers to combat this issue.

Further information on the development of the tool can be found on ResearchGate.

PLANET

PLANET (Planning Land Applications of Nutrients for Efficiency and the environmenT) is a nutrient management decision support tool for use by farmers and advisers in England/Wales and Scotland for field level nutrient planning and for assessing and demonstrating compliance with the Nitrate Vulnerable Zone (NVZ) rules.

MANNER-NPK

MANNER-NPK is a practical software tool that provides farmers and advisers with a quick estimate of crop available nitrogen, phosphate and potash supply from applications of organic manure. MANNER-NPK is applicable in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

For advice and support

The PLANET England helpline has been discontinued. If you are in England and have a nutrient management or NVZ query you can contact the Farming Advice Service by emailing advice@farmingadviceservice.org.uk or calling 03000 200 301 (Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5pm). Please note that the Farming Advice Service will be unable to assist with PLANET software queries.

There are a number of ‘Help’ guides available from within the PLANET software which provide general guidance on the use of PLANET. There is a list of Frequently Asked Questions available here.

The PLANET Scotland helpline is now supported via the Scottish Farming Advisory Service who can be contacted by emailing advice@fas.scot or calling 0300 323 0161.

2026 update

In February 2026, Defra announced the launch of a new web-based free-to-use ‘Plan and Manage Nutrient Applications Tool’ (NMPT-GB) to help farmers and advisers in England and Wales plan and record their nutrient use. The tool is an online replacement for the PLANET v.3.3 and MANNER-NPK nutrient management planning tools. It will be updated later in 2026 to include Scottish recommendations from the SAC Technical Notes.
