The ADAS archaeology and heritage team has extensive experience in providing archaeological and cultural heritage advice and consultancy. We can assist at every stage of the planning process, from pre-land-acquisition to the discharge of archaeological planning conditions.

As part of our service, we offer free initial site screening so we can assess the feasibility of your project at no cost.

The types of archaeological surveys we offer include:

  • Aerial surveys
  • Desk based assessments
  • Historic building surveys
  • Geophysical surveys
  • Walk-over surveys

Our archaeology experts can advise on the most effective technique to use depending on the ground conditions on your site.

Surveys we offer

Aerial surveys

We can provide aerial surveys and innovative geomatic solutions using:

  • UAV (drone),
  • helicopter,
  • LiDAR,
  • Digital Terrain Models (DTM)
  • fixed wing surveys

These surveys are very effective in identifying archaeology in the form of cropmarks or earthworks. They are also used for carrying out condition surveys of historic buildings and archaeological sites. However the best option will depend on your requirements.

Contact Diarmuid O’Seaneachain diarmuid.oseaneachain@adas.co.uk about how an aerial survey could help your project.

Archaeological Geophysical Surveys

Our archaeology experts can provide advice on the most effective technique to use for the ground conditions on your development site.

Geophysical surveys are a non-intrusive method of evaluation which can help determine the archaeological potential of a development site.

They are usually requested by the local authority during the planning process as part of a staged programme of evaluation. A desk-based assessment is completed before the survey. A trial trenching evaluation is then carried out once the survey is done.

We can advise on the most effective technique to use for the ground conditions on your development site. Our surveys are done in accordance with Historic England and Chartered Institute for Archaeologists Standards and Guidance.

Historic Building Surveys

We provide expert advice on the level of recording required and carrying out historic building surveys for planning.

Historic building surveys provide an accurate record of the existing structural remains and the historical uses of a building. These may need to be altered or demolished as part of a development.

If historic building recording is required as a condition of planning consent, our team can advise on the level of recording required. We will then carry out the survey and provide a report to fulfill the planning requirements. These surveys are done in accordance with Historic England and Institute of Historic Building Conservation Standard and Guidance.

Walk-over surveys

With a walk-over survey, our archaeologists will visit the site to try and identify any archeological features. These surveys are non-intrusive and will assess the character, condition and location of any features.

Walk over surveys are often done after a desk based assessment to identify any known archaeological features. We will assess any features found in the desk based assessment and record any new features discovered on site. Contact Diarmuid O’Seaneachain diarmuid.oseaneachain@adas.co.uk for more information.
