Climate change resilience
Helping clients prepare for and adapt to climate change impacts
Climate change is one of the most significant issues threatening global food security. Current projections forecast increases in the frequency and severity of extreme weather events with the potential to cause serious supply chain disruption.
- More intense rainfall events can lead to river and surface water flooding, contaminating land and damaging assets.
- Wind, rain and heat will damage infrastructure (e.g., roads, rail networks and energy supplies), causing delays.
- Heatwaves can lead to heat stress for employees, livestock and crops, reducing overall productivity.
- Coastal flooding from storm surges exacerbated by sea-level rise.
- Warmer, wetter winters can impact pest and disease survival rates and distribution.
- Changing rainfall patterns can have implications for water resource management and increase the risk of drought.
Why businesses should consider their climate resilience
How ADAS can help you build climate change resilience
Climate resilience is the ability to anticipate, prepare for, respond to and recover from significant climate threats. We work with organisations to assess their vulnerability to climate change and help them prepare for the direct and indirect impacts of extreme weather.
By assessing the probability of risks, we can create bespoke action plans and advise organisations on how best to adapt.
Climate change risk assessments
Our decades of experience in crop and livestock production means we understand both the risks and the opportunities of a changing climate. As part of a climate change risk assessment, we examine which aspects of agriculture and environment are most vulnerable to climate change and consider the knock-on effects these will have on your production.
Other areas of support
We also help businesses enhance their climate resilience by
- undertaking vulnerability risk assessments to quantify short and medium term risks
- creating a climate resilience strategy
- monitoring and evaluating current climate change adaptation action plans, including the development of indicators.
Ideas for adaption
Reviewing supply chain vulnerabilities and their anticipated severity will help us prioritise adaption actions. Any climate change adaption actions we suggest will take cost into account. We will also look for opportunities to increase performance efficiency that may result in savings. When suggesting adaption actions, we will consider quick wins and the actions that could easily fit into your current way of working.
ADAS has helped organisations develop and implement practical strategies
Previous project work highlight key practical strategies in climate resilience showing the impact of adaption and change.
- Developed action plans to reduce climate impact and address climate risk through effective adaptation measures
- Communicated climate action and sustainability messages to supply chain and/or stakeholders.
- Supported the reporting to the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures
- Prepared materials for climate change adaptation reporting as part of Defra’s Adaptation Reporting Power.
- UK land use projections and the implications for climate change mitigation and adaptation
- Research to provide updated indicators of climate change risk and adaptation action in England
- Interacting risks in infrastructure and the built and natural environments
- Research to review and update indicators of climate-related risks and actions in England
