Climate change is one of the most significant issues facing humanity. Current projections forecast increases in the frequency and severity of extreme weather events. These events have the potential to cause damage to assets and disruption to supply chain. Examples include:

  • More intense rainfall events can lead to river and surface water flooding, contaminating land and damaging assets.
  • Wind, rain and heat damage to infrastructure (e.g. roads, rail networks and energy supplies) causing delays and disruption.
  • Heatwaves can lead to heat stress for employees, livestock and crops, reducing overall productivity.
  • Coastal flooding from storm surges exacerbated by sea-level rise.
  • Warmer, wetter winters can impact pest and disease survival rates and distribution.
  • Changing rainfall patterns can have implications for water resource management and increase the risk of drought.

Climate resilience is the capacity to anticipate, prepare for, respond to, and recover from significant climate threats. We can help organisations to assess their vulnerability to climate change and extreme weather. This enables the prioritisation of actions and the implementation of adaptation plans.

Our expertise

We can support increasing climate resilience through the following services:

  • A Climate Change Risk Assessment (CCRA)
  • Quantifying and prioritising areas of greatest risk
  • Creating a climate resilience strategy
  • Monitoring and evaluating climate change adaptation action plans, including the development of indicators.

Read our capability statements for Climate Change Adaption, Carbon, and Climate Resilience.

Our primary focus is on the impacts to agri-food, but we also work across other sectors with colleagues in the wider business.

How we can help you

ADAS can help your organisation develop and implement practical strategies in climate resilience. This includes:

  • Developing action plans to reduce climate impact and address climate risk through effective adaptation measures
  • Communicating climate action and sustainability messages to your supply chain and/or stakeholders.
  • Support on reporting to the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).
  • Preparation of materials for climate change adaptation reporting as part of Defra’s Adaptation Reporting Power.
