Crayfish eDNA testing
For cost-effective monitoring of native and non-native species
The white-clawed crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes) is the UK’s only native freshwater crayfish and is listed as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species. These small (10–12cm), nocturnal crustaceans prefer clean, mineral-rich rivers and are primarily found in isolated populations across England and Wales but are almost entirely absent in Scotland.
A 70% population decline has been caused by the invasive North American signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus). It out-competes the native species for food and habitat and the lethal crayfish plague (Aphanomyces astaci), a water mould carried by signal crayfish.
Our eDNA filter kits collect samples from waterbodies, such as ponds, streams and rivers, to test for the presence or absence of single or multiple species. We can also test for crayfish plague.
Single species
- Standard: results within 7-10 working days – £170
- Fast-track: results within 3-5 working days – £248
Two species
- Standard: results within 7-10 working days – £250
- Fast-track: results within 3-5 working days – £348
Three species
- Standard: results within 7-10 working days – £330
- Fast-track: results within 3-5 working days – £448
Other species we can test for
Although we do not routinely test for other non-native species, please contact us at edna@adas.co.uk if you would like testing for the following crayfish species – red swamp (Procambarus clarkii), redclaw (Cherax quadricarinatus), narrow-clawed (Turkish) (Astacus leptodactylus), spiny-cheek (Orconectes limosus) and noble (Astacus astacus).
When to collect a sample
Because crayfish activity varies and is influenced by weather conditions, sample collection is most effective during the summer months when activity levels are highest.
When you order eDNA testing, we will send you a collection kit containing everything you need to collect a water sample.
Be careful not to collect any sediment, as this could clog the pores in the filter.
- Optimal survey period: April to October
- Sub-optimal survey period: November to March
About ADAS Biotechnology
We are a highly experienced team of molecular biologists, based at a bespoke molecular biology laboratories in South Nottingham.
Beyond accurate identification and diagnosis at a molecular level, we also develop bespoke diagnostic tests for:
- Veterinary and agricultural pathogens
- Biological markers
- Environmental DNA analysis to detect the presence of a species e.g. Great Crested Newts
