Anaerobic digestion systems feasability and planning
Independent, practical advice on planning, feasibility and compliance
Anaerobic digestion (AD), a natural process whereby tiny organisms break down plant and animal waste without using oxygen, is a major investment.
Farms typically spend between £1.5 and £3 million for a farm-scale system. The electricity generation return could be between £300k/yr (250kw) and £750k/yr (500kw). Optimising the performance of these AD plants is key to a profitable business.
The ADAS Farm Infrastructure team can advise on all stages of the process: from feasibility, planning and permitting to compliance. Our engineering team has over 40 years’ AD experience. We have audited more than 1000 farms with silos and lagoons for pollution pathways.
Achieving compliance
Whether you have a permitted or exempted anaerobic digestion process, you will also need to meet the conditions of the permit and planning.
ADAS can help you with any anaerobic digestion-related compliance issues you may have, including
- addressing complaints about odour in the countryside
- meeting the obligations of the silage slurry and agricultural fuel oils regulations and nitrate vulnerable zone rules for digestate recycling
- ensuring your system meets the construction guidance on silos and tanks and lagoons produced by the Construction Industry Research and Information Association (CIRIA)
- ensuring you have enough storage capacity over the closed spreading period.
