Farm carbon audits and advice
Curious about your carbon footprint?
Want to understand how to manage emissions, improve carbon storage and sequestration?
ADAS offers independent, expert advice on all aspects of farm carbon. Whether you are a farmer, part of a supply chain or an industry organisation, we provide tailored support in
- measuring carbon footprints
- creating carbon management action plans
- developing emission reduction strategies.
Our team has extensive experience in using custom-built and industry-standard tools to assess greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at a farm, product or system level.
The value of a farm carbon audit
An independent carbon audit is a great way to interrogate your farm’s performance. It will reveal where losses are occurring in your system and flag inefficiencies (livestock performance problems, over/under utilisation of inputs, such as feed and fertiliser). Resolving these issues will also unlock financial savings.
A carbon audit will outline whether current practices are helping to store carbon, showing you how far you are from achieving net-zero emissions. The audits are also useful for benchmarking your farm against farms of a similar size and type, revealing your farm’s true performance.

Why have a carbon audit done through ADAS?
Although countless online carbon footprint tools can calculate your carbon footprint, ADAS’ service goes beyond a calculation. We create a customised carbon-reduction plan for your farm, including
- practical actions that fit with your farming system and way of working
- clear targets and realistic timelines
- recommendations on how to boost your current level of productivity, based on what has worked for similar farms.
We’re currently working on…
Delivering farm carbon audits for the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) Environmental Baselining project
Currently, 170 British farms are taking part in the pioneering AHDB Environmental Baselining Pilot to measure their environmental impact. As a delivery partner, ADAS is visiting farms in England and Wales three times over the five years, carrying out carbon audits using the Agrecalc footprinting tool.
Along with the audit, we are working with each farmer to produce an action plan detailing how they can reduce their carbon footprint going forward. The visits in 2027 and 2029 will involve re-footprinting the farms and reviewing progress against the agreed actions.
