Independent research to help clients assess and address their supply chains’ environmental impact

ADAS offers independent research and climate mitigation advice to those with links to agriculture in their supply chains. This includes food and drink companies, users of energy crops, fibre and/or textiles industry and farmers.

Organisations are expected to show meaningful climate action to a wider range of stakeholders. Supply chain emissions – known as scope three emissions – are under scrutiny, especially when these involve agricultural raw materials.

Agriculture brings unique challenges and complexities, which are not seen in most sectors. However, it also presents powerful opportunities to reduce emissions and enhance carbon sequestration and balance any remaining emissions through improved land management practices.

Achieving net zero by 2050

Helping you to reach your net zero goals

The UK Government set out legislation in 2019 for the country to achieve Net Zero by 2050. Agriculture has some big challenges to overcome, namely:

  • the need to provide nitrogen for crop growth
  • the biological processes in livestock production that result in methane and nitrous oxide

With 80 years’ experience in agriculture, we can support the sector in their net zero journey from farm suppliers, through farmers to the processers, manufacturers and retailers that purchase farm produce. We work across all agricultural sectors including both crops and livestock, to support emission reductions. Using a robust evidence-based approach, we seek out opportunities for enhancing carbon capture.

Understanding your emissions

  • Developing evidence in the form of research projects
  • Collating evidence in reviews of mitigation practices
  • Developing of corporate strategy
  • Implementing reduction strategies on farm

ADAS also manages the UK agricultural greenhouse gas (GHG) and ammonia emissions inventory. This means we have a detailed understanding of the calculations and implications of changes in on-farm practice

We have expertise in using a wide range of commercial carbon calculators, as well as building our internal calculators using the modelling from the UK inventory and IPCC. We use these to create assessments compliant with GHG protocol or PAS2050 at an organisation, business, farm or product level as appropriate.

The data is used to develop bespoke carbon reduction and carbon balancing plans.

ADAS can support businesses in developing net-zero strategies, be it for a farm or estate or food manufactures and processors. We can co-ordinate activities, develop new baseline data and support on-going monitoring and reporting.

While measuring emissions, we also assess opportunities for carbon removals in the supply chain.
