Water voles (Arvicola amphibius) are protected under Schedule 5 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (as amended).
Water voles can be present in ditches, streams, ponds and lakes.
If water voles are found within a works area and disturbance is likely, mitigation to safeguard this species may be required. This can include trapping and translocation or displacement using habitat manipulation (dependent upon the size and permanence of the impact).
A conservation licence from the applicable Statutory Nature Conservation Organisation (SNCO), e.g. Natural England, will be required if capturing water voles or if the destruction of their habitat is required.
